PRESS RELEASE

Denny Gallery is pleased to announce Bellow, a solo exhibition by Emily Noelle Lambert running from May 18 to June 25, 2017. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.

Emily Noelle Lambert’s work explores dimensionality and space within the painting field. With her intuitive explorations of the human body, her work is characterized by its embrace of both figuration and abstraction.  Lambert’s work engages with many of the concerns of Cubism and Impressionism, but also has its own unique contemporary language and vibrant expression of color. Lambert is an interdisciplinary artist whose sculptural work informs her painting and expands its materiality into appropriated materials such as found wood.

Lambert’s most recent body of work exhibited in Bellow developed during a residency in the Brittany region of France. Her time there was defined by engagement with landscape, French gardens, and medieval architecture and materials. Secret codes and images embedded within the paintings, as well as architectural forms, evoke old world narratives and mythologies. Bellow, the title of the exhibition, is a reference to the multi-sensory, interdisciplinary aspect of the work as well as an expression of frustration with our current political moment.

Emily Noelle Lambert was born in 1975 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lives in New York City. She received her M.F.A. from Hunter College in New York and her B.A. in Visual Art from Antioch College in Ohio. Bellow will be her ninth solo gallery exhibition in New York City, following exhibitions with Art-in-Buildings (a site-specific installation in their lobby at 55 Fifth Avenue on view until October, 2017), Denny Gallery, Lu Magnus, Regina Rex, and Priska Juschka Fine Art. She has also exhibited at The Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Lambert has been awarded fellowships for artist residencies at the MacDowell Colony, the Lower East Side Printshop, Yaddo Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, and the Alfred and Trafford Klots International Artist Residency in Léhon, France. She has received press coverage and reviews in the Brooklyn Rail, the International New York Times, The Observer, Art in America, ARTNews, Modern Painters, and Hyperallergic.
