PRESS RELEASE

Denny Gallery is pleased to announce “Dark Waters,” a solo exhibition in the project gallery by Michael Flomen running from September 7 to October 8, 2017. This is the artist’s second showing with the gallery, following his participation in the group exhibition “The City & the City” in summer 2016.

“Dark Waters” is an exhibition of several unique water-borne photograms made by Michael Flomen. To make his cameraless photographs, Flomen collaborates with natural elements outside under the cover of darkness. Among the works exhibited are photograms from the “Central Park (NYC)” series, made in The Loch. The “Dark Waters” photograms were made exclusively with water from natural sources. The acidic water marks the surface of the photogram.

Flomen combines meditation and ritual actions in order to court the energies of the landscape in which the photograms are made. He creates an invitation for the unseen to expose itself. His photograms are documents of these events in the landscape.

The title “Dark Waters” reflects our troubled social, political, and environmental situation. Simultaneously, nature and the cosmos remind us of who we are and spirit reveals itself in darkness.

Michael Flomen (b. 1952, lives in New York City and Montréal) is a photographer best known for his camera-less photograms created in or with elements from nature. Flomen has work in collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, the Norton Museum of Fine Art, West Palm Beach, FL, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Canada, and the Musée national des beaux- arts du Québec, Québec, Canada, among others.
